Since giving gifts is a part of life, particularly events such as weddings, anniversaries, and Christmas, here are a few free homemade gift ideas. But first, let’s define “free.” Free is anything that you would normally have on hand or run across in your daily activities and purchases, like things that are free with purchase. It also includes anything that you can recycle, like a patterned blouse that is no longer worn because of a small stain that can be cut up into useful parts, or containers that can be reused.

Cookie mix in a jar – Save glass jars, wash and sterilize them. Then layer dry ingredients from your favorite cookie recipe in the jar. Some examples can be found here. Attach directions on the wet ingredients to be added and cooking instructions, such as heat and time. Add the final touches by using colored papers and pieces of cloth and tie it with a ribbon, strand of yarn or rubber band around the lid. Voila, a cute gift, and useful, too. This works well with decorative bottles, too, using oils with dried herbs and seasonings mixed in.

Gift basket – Watch for free-with-purchase gifts, samples, or “buy one get one free” deals. Put a dedicated basket or box in a cupboard for the items you collect. Using cellophane, wrap together a selection of the items and tie at the top with a ribbon or strip of colorful material, leaving some of the cellophane bunched loosely above the ribbon.

Homemade coupons and coupon books – Make coupons to put in cards for “free babysitting” or “free massage,” depending on whom the gift is for. Write these out neatly and add some decoration cut from magazines, newspapers, or flyers to brighten them up. And of course, the computer and printer is always a fantastic way to print some up.

This day in history – Create a mini-book on what happened on the same date in history. Include historical facts, songs, trivia, photos, horoscopes, etc. Check out www.wikipedia.org for some helpful information. This is especially good for a birthday. If you already have a few recordable CD’s and the availability of music, add a homemade CD with songs from that time period.

Baked goods – Typically, this would not be free because of the shopping required to get the baking done. But here’s an idea to make it practically free. Watch for coupons and sales regularly and pick up a cake mix or cookie mix on occasion with your regular shopping, combining the coupon with the sale price. These items store very well and for a long time. The next time you need a gift, bake it and then dress it up in a container with ribbons or glue a silk flower or two to the outside. Even better, if you have fresh flowers available, tie those onto the container.

Garden grows – If you have a garden, fruit trees or bushes or even flowers, create a bouquet of fruit, vegetables, or flowers for your gift.

Tips to remember concerning “free” gifting – Always remember the presentation. Keep your packaging in mind because it’s going to be the first impression to the receiver. Look at your gift from an objective point of view and ask yourself whether you would like the gift if someone gave it to you. And never forget, most times the best free gift of all is yourself. Just to spend time with someone visiting, helping with something, or even just as company for a television program can be the greatest gift a person can give.
