20-Year Anniversary Gifts

On the 20th anniversary, there are so many gift options available to you to commemorate this enviable relationship benchmark with your man! From traditional gifts to more creative ones, here are a few ideas to help you get you started. Before you begin to read this article, though, take a moment to try to remember each year—the best times, the worst times, the times that still bring a smile to your face, and what each year had in common. If he’s your partner, this may be easier than if he is a friend or relative. However long you’ve known him, though, if you are in the position to offer him a gift, you must have some poignant memories to recall.
One good place to start, of course, is with a traditional gift: traditionally, the 20th-anniversary gift is china. If he already has a china collection that he has contributed to over the years, he may appreciate an addition to it, or a lovely new set. But make sure it’s not just a gift for you; make sure it’s something that he really wants!
Does he enjoy throwing dinner parties for his friends and family? Or is he more of a barbecue-in-the-back-yard type? If the latter, here are some outside-of-the-box ideas that he may appreciate more. Consider getting a matched set of 20 items that he treasures. Does he collect something already? Is there empty space in his bedroom or den that’s just waiting to be filled? If he’s a reader, you could find a 20-volume set of something hard to find. If he’s a movie buff, perhaps 20 volumes of his favorite DVDs or BluRays—check out the Criterion Collection if you need somewhere to start. If he doesn’t have any traditional hobbies, but is into attending special events like car shows, sporting events, or music, perhaps 20 tickets would be a wonderful surprise.
Another option that would help him celebrate these 20 precious years is some kind of creative memento. Perhaps a scrapbook would be something that he could look through. If he’s your partner, it should be easy to find things to add to it that you can both savor together. If he’s not, perhaps you can enlist his partner and other friends and relatives in your quest. If scrapbooking’s not your cup of tea, remember that you could create something like a scrapbook with other technology. Make a homemade movie using easy software such as iMovie, create a digital photo album (there are even products that let you display these in digital frames!), write a moving essay or letter.
Remember that the best gift will be something that makes him feel special and appreciated. The more time you spend thinking fondly about his life, your memories of him, and what makes him smile, the bigger the reward will be in seeing the look on his face upon receiving your gift!
