Get Well Gifts For Men

There once seemed to be a rule about get-well gifts: Women get flowers, and men get balloons. Luckily, that silly custom has broken down in recent years, and it’s clear that men appreciate get-well flowers, too. Online retail outlets such as 1800flowers even have more masculine flower baskets, combining everything from fuzzy bears to snacks (some with fortune cookies!) with the flowers.
Balloons, of course, are always welcome. They fill up the room and provide inspirational get well messages. The FTD “Balloon Bunch” certainly sounds masculine, and chocolates or other treats can be added along with personalized messages. (How about “Get well soon, Big Guy” or “Let’s blow this room soon”?)
For the less traditional, gifts that motivate the patient to get well soon are always a good idea. What man wouldn’t appreciate a football, basketball or package of tennis or golf balls to have for when he’s feeling better? (If it’s someone very close, consider a new tennis racket or set of golf clubs, if price isn’t an issue.) New running shoes, shorts or a T-shirt or sweatshirt also can provide motivation to get well and get out.
Another looking-forward-to-health gift is a Wii game console, along with games like Wii Fit. Sports, including tennis and boxing, both guaranteeing a good workout for someone who wants to stay fit and healthy, come with the starter console at www.nintendo.com. While recuperating, there’s everything from Wii RockBand (playing along with The Beatles or in Heavy Metal or Country versions.), to a game of “Sorry,” brain or casino games, and even Frisbee. Any and all of the above should motivate the man to get well faster so he can play.
Books are always a good choice for get-well gifts. If he’s a crossword puzzle or sudoku fan, there are hundreds of books to help the patient pass the time. If he’s young at heart, introduce him to the “Dangerous Book for Boys”. Nostalgia, fun memories and an overriding desire to spend time on boyhood fantasies like making a bow and arrows or finding spies is bound to follow. Sick beds will be left far behind when the memories and dreams of adventures kick in. When was the last time someone you knew tried to make a paper hat, go-cart or a water bomb? The patient will remember how and even be encouraged to use his “invention.” There is also a Dangerous Book for Boys subtitled “Things To Know,” in case physical activities are not on the horizon or if your patient is not a handy man. That provides manly information such as “famous battles,” “the rules of soccer,” and “the greatest paper airplane in the world.” The book is guaranteed to give the patient enough trivia to entertain his guests through his entire recuperation.
The best get-well gifts for men are thoughtful gifts that make him forget his illness and head him toward health. Video games, books that make him feel young, flowers, balloons, or sports equipment all do the trick. Your good thoughts and wishes will come through loud and clear.
