Gifts For Men In The Navy
Whether your loved one is stateside or deployed, buying gifts for men in the Navy can sometimes be tricky to navigate. Storage space for sailors is very limited especially onboard ships. Packaging, insuring, and shipping overseas also has to be taken into consideration. With these problems in mind, let’s look further into items that will floor your Navy man!
Video or board games are on every sailor’s gift wish list. These are much appreciated to kill time and prevent boredom (called the doldrums in the old days). You can stick with the classics, like digital Axis and Allies or the board game Risk, or go for heavy duty with computer games by Sid Meiers (such as Pirates!), or the board game Wooden Ships and Iron Men.
Waterproof watches! I know you are slapping your forehead thinking, “Why didn’t I think of that!” Surrounded by all that water, of course a waterproof watch is a must. (I hope that it will never be tested overboard, its only test being if it were accidentally dropped down a bathroom sink.) All men would also love gifts like a high-powered magnet that can be used to pick up heavy metal objects.
An Xbox or other video game system is sure to please any man and his bunkmates. Since there is a shortage of space, choose something slim-line from the newer PS2s. Don’t forget to send along popular movies and games!
A preloaded iPod with your Navy man’s favorite music, audio books, and messages from family and friends would make a big splash! Remember to always insure anything valuable that you ship overseas.
A laptop would be an awesome gift for someone stationed at sea. It should be wi-fi ready, able to play current DVDs and loaded with software and game favorites.
Portable DVD players make thoughtful gifts for men in the Navy. Be sure to stash all his favorite movies in a handy DVD case.
Send small gift surprises as often as you can. It is not the gift–it’s the thought. Of course, the sailors might say, “It is the gift that counts!" Letters and packages from home are always very important to our men in the Navy serving far from home.
New family photos or a video of friends clowning around can make a sailor’s day. Any reminders you send let them know they are not forgotten and enable them to feel a part of what is going on back on the home front. A nephew’s baseball picture sliding into home or a video of a daughter’s piano recital put them front row and center at special events they do not want to miss.
Your man and his shipmates will adore your sending homemade candy, cookies, and anything sweet to eat. If you listen close enough, you will hear them screaming for more! Without access to stoves and in some cases the ability to bake, Navy men find it comforting to receive care packages of baked goods.
As you can tell from our varied list, gifts for navy men come in all shapes and sizes. However, the best treasure is one you send from your heart. So keep those cards and letters coming!
