Maple leaves in Autumn.

If a man in your life, be it your father, your brother, or your boyfriend, has an important occasion coming up, you may be at a loss for the right gift. Depending on the relationship you two share and the specific occasion at hand, you will have a different set of gifts you might like to give.

Does he like sports? Does he like tools? Does he love video games? Find something he’s into, and something he can use. For example, if your grandfather loves watching movies but has trouble seeing the remote, an excellent gift option may be a remote with large buttons and print so he can not only see to find it, but he can see to use it.

Don’t think about what you would want him to have. Think about something he would want to have. Despite the fact that clothes are a classic and common gift from women to men, it may make the man feel like you don’t like the way he dresses, especially if the two of you are significant others. Avoid clothing unless his personality lets you know he would enjoy and appreciate the gift. Don’t buy clothing unless you’re sure you know him well enough to get the right kind of clothing.

Don’t be afraid of gift certificates. They aren’t always impersonal. If they show you thought about him, he’ll enjoy it. For instance, getting a gift certificate that’s good for a round of golf at the local course for the golf lover in your life is not a bad gift.

Don’t be afraid to ask him questions. You might not want to directly ask him what he wants for a gift, but there are several ways you can beat around the bush and be discreet enough to get ideas. This is a good way to get ideas if there are still a few weeks or months before the occasion. This way he has time to nearly forget the conversation and won’t get any ideas about what the gift could possibly be.

When choosing gifts for men, it’s important not to rush through the decision. As much as they may hate to admit it, they like getting gifts, and especially those that are thoughtful. They’d much rather receive a gift you thought about and personalized to their personality, rather than a generic, masculine, stereotypical gift. In other words, don’t get him tools just because he’s a man. Get him tools because he likes them and can always be found drooling over more of them, whether he needs them or not.
