The Price Of Their Toys

So you have a soon-to-be college graduate. Great! On the other hand, you want to give him or her something but do not know what would be appropriate. Not great. Graduations are few and far apart in one’s lifetime, so they are causes for celebration. They symbolize another step forward in life, and finding gifts that match this is not always easy, so here are some suggestions.

First off, for those who really cannot think of what the graduate would want, a bit of money makes a good choice. This only goes as far as you not caring what the money is spent on, so choose wisely. Make sure not to give too much or too little.

Speaking of cars, if you can afford it, you can buy a car for your college graduate. It does not have to be one of the latest models or even brand-new for that matter. A well-maintained second-hand car would make a valuable gift to the fresh graduate. On the other hand, the newer the car and the more recent the model, the more likely the recipient is to like it, except if he likes more classic models. If you can get a feel for what car he wants or ask him directly, then you can be confident in your choice.

Electronic gadgets like digital cameras, music players, cellular phones, and PDAs—Personal Digital Assistants—are also nice. They may be a bit costly, but they provide so much entertainment and functionality. Since college graduation only really comes once in one’s lifetime, the cost can be justified by the special character of the occasion. In the case of the digital camera or cellular phone with camera, it is best to give it before the day of the ceremony, so the graduate can capture the spirit of the moment to cherish forever. Music players provide theoretically endless entertainment, since the music can be updated as needed.

A more traditional gift would be something like a relatively expensive ink pen. The pen is a mighty symbol of learning, both that which has been acquired and that which has yet to be. It is also a symbol of expression, something that becomes important when one goes out into the real world. It may be a bit old-fashioned, but your fresh graduate will appreciate the ideals behind it.

For the men, a good suit makes a wonderful gift. The suit will surely see use if your graduate is entering the corporate realm, and it is important to have one for special occasions, so a good suit is a good investment.

So there you have it. These pretty much cover the gifts that would complement the event. Do remember to take the personal preferences of the graduate, like color and style, into consideration.
